What is GOCITRUS?
Citrus farming faces important challenges in terms of economic, social and environmental sustainability. Citrus identification, as well as contrasted and updated information on rootstocks and varieties, is the main basis for varietal management and planning, and constitutes one of the major demands of the citrus industry. The GOCITRUS Task Force promotes a varietal authentication system based on genomic data and associates it with the development of a decision support tool for appropriate varietal choice. These tools constitute a great opportunity for the innovative and sustainable development of the citrus sector.
Objectives
Generation of an identification system based on the Citruseq genomic database.
Creation of a PPP to assist the decision making of the producer sector in the choice of varietal and rootstock, taking into account their particular characteristics of cultivation.
Impacts
Elimination of errors in the procurement of plant material.
Improving producers’ competitiveness and traceability through certification at each point of the value chain.
Support for varietal diversification and farm restructuring and modernisation.
Promoting more efficient and responsible use of resources.
Reduction of current land abandonment and improvement of landscape preservation with sustainable productive farms.
Contribute to reducing erosion and improving soil conservation and biodiversity.
